Sharpe Farm Supplies was founded in 1986 by Bill and Marion Sharpe. The main office, fertilizer tower, and grain elevator were constructed on the Sharpe family farm, located on the north side of Guelph. Sharpe's original goal was to meet the crop input needs of area farmers by supplying them with fertilizer, herbicides and seed. It wasn't long before custom application of fertilizer and herbicides were added to Sharpe's growing list of services to allow their products to be applied in a timely and precise manner. Sharpe's have always been an early adopter of technology, such as offering the area's first air-flow machine for accurate fertilizer application, and the area's first high clearance row crop sprayer for minimal in crop spraying damage.
In the early 90's Sharpe's began to expand the capacity of their grain elevator. Sharpe's had been drying and storing grains for their own farm since the early 70's, but saw a need to provide these services to their customers as they expanded their operations. Larger and faster unloading pits were installed and a new dryer was erected to provide the growers with faster turnaround so they could spend their time in the field harvesting their crops, and not in lines waiting to unload their trucks and wagons. As well, Sharpe began to offer new grain programs to area farmers including non-GMO soybeans in 2000 and Food Grade soybeans in 2007. These programs allowed area farmers to be paid a premium for providing a value added product to the marketplace.
In 1995, Sharpe's diversified their operation into feed by purchasing Topnotch Feeds in Moffat. The Moffat mill was a Purina dealer that specialized in equine and custom feeds. Sharpe's recognized the importance of providing their equine customers not only with nutritious feeds, but feeds that were of the utmost safety. To meet this need, Sharpe's converted the Moffat mill into a drug free manufacturing facility to eliminate contamination risks. Sharpe's would later further expand their feed division by acquiring Raceway Feeds in 1997, Kay's Feeds in 1999, Wellington Feeds in 2003, Freelton Feeds in 2011, Sawyers Feed Mill in 2016 and most recently Balanger and Valley Farm and Feed in northern Ontario. The growth in size of Sharpe's feed division has allowed them to offer their customers, sales and support staff that specialize in their respective fields of equine, dairy, beef and hog nutrition. Sharpe's now offers eight locations in Guelph, Moffat, Fergus, Freelton, Shelburne, Desboro, Sudbury and Espanola to provide their customers with convenient locations for sourcing their feed needs.
Sharpe's has grown in size to over 40 employees today. Sharpe Farm Supplies will continue to evolve as they look for new opportunities to serve the needs of their customers.
